Savoring the Sweet and the Sour of Summer

Savoring the Sweet and the Sour of Summer

Hello friends... It has been a while. Summer days are here again and time has been passing faster than ever. I've been trying to soak it all in as much as possible. Lately, I've been paying particular attention to my attitude towards the sweet verses the "sour" moments. I want to stay open to it all. After all, life is filled with both and its richness comes from the contrast of it all - those moments that have both the sweet and the sour all mixed together. And in keeping with that effort this post is a simple stream of sweet and sour moments, gratitudes of sorts. I hope you can relate and enjoy the "and-both-ness" of it all.

Neighbor's rooster crowing at 5 a.m. wakes me early so I get to hear the morning air filled with a chorus of birdsong. Tippy canoe ride in the wind, splashing mama to hear her yelp, rock throwing in the river, scavenger hunts in the backyard, bandaids, baseball, and splinters.

Long days filled with sunshine, squirmy sunscreen applications, squirt gun fights, and drippy-sticky popsicles. Big tears over hurt feelings, tickle giggles to get over it, catching butterflies, and fearful dashes away from the neighbor's overly enthusiastic puppy.

Long evenings of art making into the wee hours of the morning, up early to do the daycare drop, mid-day sweaty run in the hot sun, a thoughtful text from a friend, and a silly game of tag at the end of a long day. Hauling the sloshy watering can to the thirsty plants, singing songs in the bathroom, planning play dates, hunting for a birthday gift, and tearful searching for a lost toy.

The smell of BBQ smoke in my hair, sandy feet on my pillow, camping on the river, sticky s'more kisses, and laughing with old friends around the campfire. The joy of opening a new CSA box, fresh veggies in every meal, a little red smile looking up at me while cherry picking, making the snapdragons growl, cheeks filled with blueberries, wet footprints down the hall, hard questions about "bad guys" and chasing away the spiders in the sunroom. Soak it in. Savor it all. The sweet and the sour. All of it, all of it, all of it.
